Work to build a transport hub in Hereford has now officially got underway.

The first piece of ground was broken into yesterday (21 August), with the project aiming to provide an easy-to-use, reliable link to all modes of transport.

Approved last May by Herefordshire Council, main contractor McPhillips of Telford was announced in April earlier this year.

Set to be based outside Hereford train station, it's due to cost around £10m in total, with the plan for it to be complete at some point next year.

The council's cabinet member for transport and infrastructure Philip Price says it's great to get it all started.

"It's been a very long time coming," he said.

"We've got to a point where we've got the budget, we've got a contractor, we're ready to go, and we've got a times scale to get it delivered.

"What it'll mean is when you get here on a train, you can come out of the station's doors and you're going to have this great area in front of you that has got a view of Hereford and whether you want to walk Hereford into the city centre, want to catch a bike, a taxi, a bus, you can."

Plans are to create new bus stands and layovers, taxi and car parking areas, including commuter and short term parking, with the hub also providing indoor welfare facilities for passengers and covered cycle facilities and lockers to encourage commuter cycle parking.

The scheme is a section from the Improving Transport in Hereford programme and is part of a £19,990,000 investment from Levelling Up Funding offered by government for a package of transport and travel measures in and around Hereford city.
