Worcestershire man jailed for rape and sexual assault of girl

A Worcestershire man's been jailed for three and a half year for the rape and sexual assault of a girl under 16.

33 year old Joshua Newell from Peach Avenue, Drakes Broughton, was found guilty during a trial at Worcester Crown Court and today (Friday 25th April) been sentenced.

He's been convicted of rape of a girl aged under 16 between 2005 and 2007 and sexual assault on a girl between 2007 and 2008.

Newell was also under 16 at the time of the offences.

The sentence also takes into consideration three further indecent photograph offences that he pleaded guilty to.

Newell admitted making an indecent photograph, namely accessible Category A movie of a child and making indecent photographs, namely two accessible Category B movies of a child.

He's been convicted of possessing extreme pornographic images, namely 14 accessible extreme pornographic movies which portrayed, in an explicit and realistic way, a person performing an act of intercourse with a live animal, which were grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character and a reasonable person looking at the image would think that any such person or animal was real.

Those three offences were committed between 2016 and 2022.

Newell was further ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115 at court today.

Detective Constable Ian Jones of Hereford CID said: “We are pleased to get this sentencing for Newell today for these horrific sexual crimes and would like to praise the courage of the victim and those affected by his actions for their bravery in coming forward.

“We hope this successful prosecution shows we always take people who think they are a victim of sexual offences seriously, no matter how long ago they may have taken place and will do our utmost to secure a prosecution and conviction against those perpetrating these crimes."
