A derelict building in Worcester's riverside is to be the latest art spot in the city.

The old pumping station - which has been left to its own for decades - was the scene of a tragedy in 2003, when 18-year-old Aidan Botfield fell through the roof and drowned.

Now, local musician Oliver Carpenter has been given permission by the current owner to give the building a new lease of life.

Working with artists from Worcester, he plans to turn the place into a place for temporary artworks and sculptures.

"We want to develop something similar to the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, a location to say something about all that is marvellous about our city and bring ‘big art’ to our riverside. Visible all along the riverside from the Arches to the bridge and the Cathedral" says Oliver.

We hear the first sculpture could go up as early as next week.

Organisers say they're keen to hear from artists and organisations, and are open to receive all kinds of responses for the space from a range of artistic disciplines.

"We have a fantastic first work of art which will be installed very soon and we are beginning to have conversations with a range of artists both locally and regionally" says Oliver.
