A £50,000 fundraising appeal has been launched to enhance the new accident and emergency department which is being built in Worcester.

The Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity is calling on the local community to help transform the experience of care for urgent and emergency care patients across the county.

The charity is aiming to raise £50,000 to support improvements to patient care and experience as part of the new Urgent and Emergency Care development currently being built at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The trust said it is transforming its urgent and emergency care services at the hospital through the relocation and expansion of the hospital’s emergency department which will open later this year.

Plans also include a dedicated children’s emergency department, X-ray and other diagnostic facilities.

Sophie Burt, head of fundraising at the charity said: “As an NHS charity our aim is to provide those added extras that improve the environment and enhance patient care and outcomes.

“The Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal will fund projects including play equipment and artwork in the children’s waiting area and treatment rooms, entertainment systems for young adults, charging stations for patients, bespoke artwork throughout the department and enhancements to the mental health assessment rooms.”

“More than 150,000 patients a year access these services and so these enhancements will make a huge difference to their experience while they are in the department.”

She said artwork can put children at ease and mean treatment can be quicker, but the charity also support the NHS in a number of other ways, including making staff feel valued.

She added@ “The expansion of urgent care facilities in the refurbished Aconbury East block at the hospital is at the heart of the trust’s efforts to put patients first.

“As a charity, we are so excited to launch the Worcestershire Urgent and Emergency Care Appeal and any donations our community are able to give will make a huge difference to patients needing urgent and emergency care in Worcestershire.”
