A street in Worcester city centre will be closed to vehicles as part of a three month trial.

The owner of Triple B Belgian Beer Bar and Cafe has spearheaded the campaign over safety concerns for punters.

Triple B, and it's neighbours the Oil Basin and Keystones, were all forced to expand their outdoor seating when coroanvirus restrictions only permitted outdoor dining last year.

"The extra seating resulted in a great atmosphere, loads of people drinking outdoors, a real buzz about the place", explains Craig Finn, co-owner and manager of Triple B.

"We found that locals and visitors alike were really complimentary about the atmosphere and the buzz it was creating.

"But then came about the issue of HGVs and other vehicles using the road".

HGVS, delivery vehicles and cars are allowed to drive down the street after 6pm.

However concerns were raised about the safety of punters as vehicles used the narrow street.

"From about 6pm, HGVS come through and we have to pull in our parasols and benches.

"People are also having to stand up and the HGVs are literally squeezing between the.

"It's pretty dangerous anyway but when you throw in alcohol it's even more dangerous."

After three months, Worcester City Council will consult with the businesses on Copenhagen Street and the businesses which require access for their delivery drivers to decide if it will become permanent.

Pedestrians and cyclists are still allowed to use the road as part of the trial.
