Worcester-based Royal Life Saving Society urge people to stay safe around water as temperatures rise
Parts of Herefordshire and Worcestershire could see temperatures of up 29 degrees today
Research from Worcester-based the Royal Life Saving Society UK has found more people lose their lives to accidental drowning in the UK during periods of hot weather.
Temperatures are set to reach as high as 29 degrees today as Herefordshire and Worcestershire, with the charity reminding people they need to be taking extra care.
Two independent studies carried out by Bournemouth University and the Royal Life Saving Society UK also found during peak temperatures teenagers and young adults are more at risk.
CEO of the Royal Life Saving Society Robert Gofton says while it's great to go out and enjoy the weather, it's vital people listen to the advice out there so they can keep themselves safe.
"We've done a study that demonstrates there is an increase in the risk of drowning when the weather and temperature increases," he said.
"We're going through a really nice hot spell of weather, but that weather does have consequences, and we've discovered you're five times greater at risk of drowning than at any other time of the year.
"It really is a key time to have a conversation with those individuals more at risk about water safety, and if you can get yourself good information and good advice about what to do and how to stay safe, then you're going to have a fantastic time."
