Worcester-based charity says stay safe around water after drinking
The Royal Life Saving Society is running their Don't Drink and Drown campaign in the run up to Christmas
A Worcester-based charity is urging people to take extra care over the festive period when heading out and consuming alcohol.
The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS) are running their Don't Drink and Drown campaign in the run up to Christmas, aimed at informing people to avoid dangerous routes near water on their way home.
Interim charity director Matt Croxall says simple things like not walking home alone, and making sure friends or family members don't do the same can be really important in staying safe.
He said: "We're never going to discourage people from going out at the festive period and enjoying themselves, but we're conscious that some of those bars and restaurants could be on sites that are close to water.
"So what we want to do is make sure that people are armed with the knowledge of what to do if the worst happens and they do end up in the water, or if they see somebody in the water, and ultimately, this can save lives.
"Always walk home with a friend or a member of your family so there is somebody there to help you, or at least call 999 if somebody ends up getting into trouble, and then if you do end up in the water, then it's that float to live message that we always give out for people to know."
According to a One Poll survey, 3 in 4 of young adult drinkers think it is okay to drink alcohol and get into the water.
Don't Drink and Drown runs from 12-20 December.
