West Mercia Police check 'badger sites' to make sure animal is safe
The rural crime team say it's vital to protect and keep wildlife safe
West Mercia Police say they are working at badger sites across Herefordshire and Worcestershire to keep the animal safe.
The rural crime team, alongside other groups, protect the wildlife, and make sure the animal hasn't been disturbed.
They are also reminding people across Herefordshire and Worcestershire to make sure they respect the laws, including the ones on wildlife.
Nigel Bolton is a rural crime prevention officer who regularly checks on places where badgers are, and he believes it's important for them to keep showing a presence out in the zones and communities.
"It's one of the best roles in policing if you're passionate about wildlife, and I think it's important we protect what we have," Nigel said.
"The problem badgers face is sometimes people block their sets and ways in to their homes, and then sometimes they get dug out, but there's also where dogs are sent in to find where they are at, and it's just horrible.
"They are a loved animal, and they have a right to live where they can, so it's only right we try and preserve that for them."
On helping other areas covered by the rural crime team, Nigel added: "I just want to support and help farmers as much as I can.
"If it wasn't for the farmers, we wouldn't have the crops and food they produce, or have the beautiful countryside like we usually see on the Malvern Hills, so for me, I want to use my role just to show the importance of the rural community, and why we need to protect it."
