Warning after increase in fires from chimneys and wood burning stoves
People are seeking alternative methods to heat their homes as energy prices rise.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is warning people of the risk of fires involving chimneys and wood burning stoves.
Wood burning stoves are becoming more popular with homeowners due to the high price of energy.
The rescue service says they recorded just 22 fires from these appliances in 2021 and 75 fires in 2022.
However, from January 20 to January 27 this year, they had to respond to at least one call a day.
In a bid to prevent such fires, people are advised to:
- Have your chimney swept regularly by a certified sweep.
- Keep your chimney, flues and appliances well maintained.
- Don't store wood too close to the fire.
- Never interrupt the air supply by blocking air vents.
- Avoid 'slumbering' an appliance, unless it has been tested as safe.
- Make sure to use fire guard to protect against flying sparks.
- Have at least one fire alarm on each floor.
- Have a carbon monoxide alarm in all rooms with fuel burning heating.
Sara Hall is the Station Commander at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and she said in an interview with Free Radio: “Using good quality dry wood and sweeping your chimney regularly will help protect your home against unwanted fires which, believe me ,you do not want.”
