University of Worcester students complete art mural project
The design is inspired by the city's musical heritage
University of Worcester students have been putting the finishing touches on their art mural which has been inspired by the city's musical heritage.
They’ve been working with Worcester born and internationally renowned artist Rob Draper, along with schools in the area to create the design this week.
Cosmin Popescu is one of the students who's been working on the project, and he came up with the idea to make the display more inclusive by adding a poem he created in both text and braille.
"We were thinking about how do we stop this wall from getting graffiti on it again, and we thought it would be great to put this piece of art on there which delivered a message, but could be accessed by everyone," Cosmin said.
"My idea was to put the full poem on the mural so that people could see it, but then put it in braille underneath so it was more inclusive.
"It's just uplifting, and nice to walk by and see for people in the community, and it's had a big impact on how I design my other work as well."
The wall used for the mural is the one between the new Elizabeth Garrett Anderson building and the Green Self Storage building on Hylton Road.
Simon Atkins is the owner of the wall it's all been painted on and says it looks great.
"It's probably the most exciting thing that has happened to this building since 1960," Simon said.
"Seeing the different artists working on it in the last week, everybody has got a happy smile on their face, and I've not seen one person who's walked past that haven't enjoyed seeing it.
"I really think it's special, and I think the quotation on it really sums up something positive about the city's heritage and the work everyone has done here on it."
The piece of art has a quote from composer Edward Elgar at the heart of it, along with other parts which reflect Worcester and its music.
