University of Worcester netball club nearing end of around 2,000km moving challenge
Students are trying to cover the distance together throughout October as part of breast cancer awareness month
The University of Worcester netball club are nearing the end of a challenge which has seen them aim to move over 1,200 miles this month to highlight the topic of breast cancer.
Students are trying to collectively cover around 2,000km (1,242 miles), which is more than the distance from Worcester to Rome, through different types of movement throughout October.
Coinciding with breast cancer awareness month, the group have also managed to raise over £3,200 money for the charity Breast Cancer Now.
Head of Netball Holly French, who came up with the idea, says its been an important challenge to do, with figures showing about 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year.
"A lot of the girls, after talking to them, have had personal experience with it, with their family members, so we wanted to all get together as part of a community," she said.
"The club, we're one family anyway, but this has really brought them in closer.
"When I introduced it, I myself was quite emotional when bringing it to them, and I think that in itself shows us we're all on the same kind of level playing field here, and we want to support one another, and that's kind of what they've done."
Made up of more than 75 members, the Club has five teams who compete in the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) league and a development squad. Players range from local club level to internationals.
Members have been tracking their miles each time they do a run, cycle or walk and also held a 24-hour challenge on campus last Saturday (25 October), going out in pairs exercising in half-hour slots continuously over a 24-hour period to add to their total.
