Regal Cinema in Evesham to mark its 90th birthday
The Grade II listed building will mark the date with a performance by violinist Nigel Kennedy
The Regal Cinema in Evesham is celebrating its 90th birthday with a special performance by Nigel Kennedy.
The historic art deco building was built in 1930 as an entertainment venue hosting films and music.
In the early 2000’s, the building became derelict and was under threat of demolition.
However, former employees at the Regal contacted local heritage to get the building listed.
This meant the building was protected for its historical and architectural significance, making it difficult to knock the building down.
The Regal remained derelict for ten years before a local family purchased the building and took on the mammoth restoration job.
Laurence Wiper works at the Regal Cinema in Evesham and says: “Towns like Evesham, with 25,000 people, need venues where you can watch films and events.”
“There is a lack of cultural offerings in market towns, if you go to Birmingham there is anything and everything you can dream of.”
With the support of the local authority and businesses in Evesham, the restoration project was completed, and the venue opened.
