Disruption is expected in Redditch over the next three weeks as part of plans to revamp the town centre.

Worcestershire County Council said preparation works for its public space improvements are set to begin.

They will pave the way for the next phase of improvements in Redditch town centre, a project which aims to make it more attractive for visitors and help boost trade for shops and businesses.

Holes are being dug in selected locations over a three-week period to find existing utility services such as water and electricity supplies.

The council said the results will feed into the design for the next phase of improvement work focussing on Unicorn Hill, Church Green West, and St Stephen’s Churchyard.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: ‘’These investigation works will help shape the design to upgrade the town centre for people, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.

“While residents and local businesses may notice a small amount of disruption, this work is essential to help to minimise the amount of utility works that may be required later when the improvement project gets underway next year as planned.

“We’d like to thank people in advance for their patience during this time.”

The ground investigations will bring some disruption to traffic as temporary traffic lights are needed at some locations, the council warned.

It said it is working in partnership with Redditch Borough Council on improving the public space and will be the third phase of public space improvements for the town centre after works in Alcester Street and Market Place.

The project is also being designed to tie in with plans to develop Redditch Railway Station.

Construction is scheduled to start in Summer 2024 out of Towns Deal funding provided by the UK Government as part of a wider programme of works to help regenerate the town centre.
