A former prison officer has been sentenced to five months in prison, for communicating with a serving prisoner by mobile phone.

Suzanne Cope, 48, a former prison officer at HMP Hewell in Redditch, was handed the sentence at Worcester Crown Court on 5 October 2023 after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing.

The offences, involving one prisoner, happened when she was a serving prison officer and took place between April and June 2020.

DC James Green, said: “We’re pleased with the custodial sentence handed to Cope. She abused her position of trust within the prison and it’s right that she faces the consequences.

“I hope that this case sends a clear sentence that we will take action against though who commit crime, regardless of who they are and what their profession is.”
