Plaque revealed for University of Worcester student who died in the River Severn
The tribute has been unveiled on Sabrina Bridge in Worcester in memory of 18-year-old Tom Jones who sadly lost his life in 2018.
The University of Worcester student who was from Bromsgrove died after falling into the River Severn on his way home from a night out with friends in September 2018.
The plaque sits on the end of the refurbished bridge as it goes onto Hylton Road.
It reads: "With heartfelt thanks to the wonderful community of Worcester for your compassion, kindness and overwhelming support.
"In loving memory of Thomas Jones: 30 August 2000 - 18 September 2018"
Worcestershire County Council agreed with Tom’s family in 2018 that a memorial would be placed on the bridge when the major refurbishment had been completed.
Jon Fraser, Worcestershire County Council Highways, said: "I’ve stayed in touch with Tom’s family throughout the Sabrina Bridge refurbishment and I’m really pleased that we’re now at a stage where we can unveil the memorial to Tom.
"The bridge was filled with tributes and Worcestershire really came to support Tom’s family in 2018, and so it’s great for there to now be a permanent tribute."
Ian and Vicki Jones, Tom’s parents, spoke at the unvailing of the tribute: "We are truly overwhelmed by your support and kindness, this is such a fitting tribute and we honestly can’t put into words what this means to us as a family.
"We will never ever forget how Worcester came together for us. Our most sincere thanks to Jon Fraser and all involved at Worcestershire County Council for arranging this and for the amazing support you have been."
