Plans to build a new road crossing the river Wye in Hereford are set to be discussed by Herefordshire Council's Cabinet next week.

The council have outlined in their Core Strategy and emerging draft Local Plan, focused on a new road strategy, that the western bypass route is now back up for consideration, after work was stopped on the scheme in 2021.

They say this bypass would re-route the A49 to the west of the city over a new bridge across the Wye, reducing the reliance on the Greyfriars Bridge, which is the only one that currently crosses the river for traffic.

Cabinet member for transport and infrastructure councillor Philip Price said: "“The decision we’re taking next week is an important one for the future of our city and our county.

“We need to make sure we choose a road strategy that strengthens the resilience of our network, delivers more reliable journey times and improves road connections across the city and county.

“We will be fully consulting with residents and businesses as we progress.”

Plans will move forward on the project if the move is backed by the cabinet at next Thursday's meeting.
