The new Worcester City Council leader says it's important to deliver projects across the area that tackle key issues people are facing.

Labour's Lynn Denham has taken up the role, with Jabba Riaz from the same party as deputy.

They claimed 17 seats from the 35 available at the all-out elections earlier this month, falling one short of the majority, with the Green party taking 12 seats.

Councillor Denham has outlined some of the main priorities she says the council will focus on during their time in charge.

"I want this leadership for the council to be more outward facing," she said.

That means we are going to listen to people and talk to organisations that have an interest in the city that can make a difference, and are committed to what Worcester is about, to see what they are saying about what we can do.

"What we want to do for Worcester is to revitalise the city centre, while also being able to support people with the cost of living crisis, and make it easier for people to get around the area."

She says the council are committed to becoming more climate friendly and working towards 'net zero', while also helping to support Worcestershire County Cricket Club to try and stay at their home ground on New Road, after they suffered more flooding through the winter.

"There's a lot of concern around Worcestershire Cricket Club," Lynn said.

"They're talking about not being able to continue operating within the city because of the flooding problem, but we want to talk to people as there must be a solution to this.

"It's such an iconic part of the city the cricket club, and we need to work out how we can help them to keep first class cricket where it is."

Councillor Mel Allcott was also announced as the new Mayor of Worcester at the Annual Council meeting.
