A watchdog is close to completing its investigation into West Mercia Police’s handling of the Alfie Steele case.

Nine-year-old Alfie, from Droitwich, died in February 2021 after being subjected to months of abuse.

The Indepedent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) opened an investigation in July 2023 following the convictions of Alfie’s mother Carla Scott for manslaughter and her partner Dirk Howell for murder.

The IOPC’s investigation has been focused on West Mercia Police’s response to concerns for Alfie’s welfare.

The force is known to have had contact with Scott and Howell multiple times in the years before Alfie’s murder.

A final report on the investigation is understood to be complete and going through the IOPC’s review processes.

It will then be shared with West Mercia Police, who will have 28 days to respond.

The report will reveal whether anyone at the force behaved in a manager which would justify disciplinary proceedings.
