Horse riders take to Worcestershire streets in vulnerable road users campaign

There were more than 3,000 incidents where riders or horses were injured last year

Horse riders in Worcestershire are taking to the streets today - to raise awareness of vulnerable road users.

Last year alone, there were more than 3,000 incidents where equestrians or their animals were injured by vehicles.

Local woman, Caroline Rushton, has been backing the Pass Wide and Slow campaign.

"The more we get it out there, and for people to notice us, hopefully we'll be able to get our point across and make everybody safer on the road - whether it be horse and rider, and cars as well," she says.

"We just want to get more awareness of the traffic.

"It's very important so that we can feel we can get out on our horses and enjoy our rides, without worrying if there's going to be incidents or consequences."

Caroline tells us why people should slow down when passing a horse:

"Sometimes you do get angry traffic users that haven't got much patience.

"When they get cross or zoom past, sometimes they think they're saving themselves a second or two.

"But if a horse spooks and jumps to the side, it will take up a lot more of their time because the horse could end up on their bonnet or through their windscreen," she says.

She tells us what they hope to achieve today:

"Hopefully the more traffic that acknowledges us, the better.

"We'll all be in high-vis, and that's what we normally wear anyway."

The ride will cover a circuit of Hanley Swan incorporating Gilbert's End and a brief stop on the green at the Swan Inn pub.
