Herefordshire council approves additional funding for ‘Home for Ukraine’
Over 135 Ukrainian refugee children are attending Herefordshire schools
Herefordshire council says it will continue funding the ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme to support local people who are housing Ukrainian refugees.
Sponsors will receive a £350 a month ‘thank you’ from the government for taking in Ukrainian refugees for at least six months and up to a year.
The refugees can live, study and work in the UK for up to three years.
They will able to access benefits, healthcare and other support.
Herefordshire has provided several Ukrainians with a home and over 135 children have been placed in schools in the area.
"The funding we provide, as well as the services we can offer and signpost to, give guests the fundamental help they need."
An integration grant scheme was launched in September, offering grants of up to £100,000, to help organisations helping to integrate refugees.
Councillor Pauline Crockett, cabinet member for Health and Adult Wellbeing, said she was "very pleased" with the council's response.
She said: "It gives us a strong platform to build on to support people arriving here from Ukraine.
"The funding we provide, as well as the services we can offer and signpost to, give guests the fundamental help they need."
She added: "people in the county had made a great effort to welcome refugees into the county.
“Already, there have been many events taking place that bring people together."
