Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue service are reminding people to make sure they are staying safe, particularly around open water this bank holiday weekend.

It follows the National Fire Chiefs Council's (NFCC) Be Water Aware campaign this week.

The service is also calling on people to take care if having barbecues and heading out on walks.

Watch commander for prevention in the service James Gough says it is important people listen to the safety advice out there.

He said: "This time of year people tend to want to try and cool off by jumping into rivers, lakes, but cold water shock this time of year is particularly common, especially with the hot weather, with people just not understanding that water can still be dangerously cold.

"The important thing is if you do have the temptation to jump into any form of water don't do it alone and if you do find yourself in a situation where you are in some cold water, the important thing is not to panic.

"If you are thinking about going off on hikes, it is important to stay well hydrated and take some bottles of water with you and if you are going to use disposable barbecues, then make sure you are putting it out afterwards and you are making sure that if you are putting them into bins that they are completely cool."
