Tributes have been paid to Redditch's former Conservative MP Karen Lumley who has died aged 59.

She was first elected in 2010 and represented the town until 2017 when she stepped down due to ill health.

Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt gave an emotional tribute to Mrs Lumley, telling the House the former MP had died.

Ms Mordaunt said she was a "larger-than-life character", adding: "She was a force of nature, and a force for good. We will miss her, her amazing hairdos, and the joy she brought us all, and we will cherish the memories we have of her."

Rachel Maclean, who succeeded Mrs Lumley, said she was hugely saddened, adding: "I can say I’m proud to have followed in the footsteps of such a charismatic and strong woman.

“In her time as the Member of Parliament for Redditch, Karen demonstrated tonnes of compassion and a genuine desire to improve people’s lives.

“She will be much missed by many people.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Karen’s family and friends at this very difficult time. May she rest in peace.”

Sajid Javid, Bromsgrove MP and former health secretary, said he was "deeply saddened" by her death.
