A recycling expert in Worcestershire is urging residents to make greener choices when disposing Christmas waste.

It’s said there's a rise in waste this time of year, as a lot of festive items like wrapping paper and gifts cannot be repurposed.

Many items are accepted at local Recycling Centres such as cans, cardboard, real Christmas trees, glass jars and bottles, paper, large plastics, toys and white goods.

These sites will be open as usual over the festive period - except on Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Katy Boom, Director of Sustainability from the University of Worcester, is advising households who are planning trips to tips this month to recycle right.

She said: “If you've got an artificial tree and you get it out for at least seven Christmases, then that's going to be more sustainable. But if you have gone for a real tree, do remember that the council will recycle it for you. You just have to take it to one of the council’s recycling sites.

“Don't put anything with lots of food on in your recycling bin. So, be super careful about that. Remember what you can and can't recycle. The lists are available on the County Council website.”

She also shares top tips on how to reduce food waste post-Christmas.

Katy said: “Thinking creatively and thinking about using the freezer, so if you've got some leftover turkey or nut roast or whatever, you can slice it up and bag it up and pop it in the freezer and use it for lunches.

“And if you've bought too many oranges or too many other kind of fruits, you can dehydrate them and those you can pop in a jar and can store for a long time.”
