The chair of the Herefordshire Histories group says it is important we continue to remember key parts of history such as VE Day.

Most VE day celebration events in Herefordshire and Worcestershire take place on VE Day itself on Thursday (8 May) but some start across the UK today.

David Hitchiner says his aunt moved to Hereford from the Channel Islands in the Second World War and thinks it is vital to keep holding these events.

"She came here with her brother to Hereford and she got a job, then she met my uncle who was training at RAF Hereford and they married in St Martin's Church in Hereford," he said.

"I'd love to know what they were doing on VE Day and whether they were married by then and it made me want to go away and actually do some research and try to find out a little bit more about my family.

"I think the great thing about VE Day though was it is about victory, but it's not celebrating war, but more the peace it created."

A Herefordshire history festival is due to take place from 10-18 May where pieces of history from VE Day will be remembered.
