New average speed cameras are to be installed on a part of the A49 from Leominster to Hereford.

Set to go live in March 2026, cameras will placed on the 50mph section of the A-road at Dinmore.

Data published in the announcement by West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has revealed over the past 4 years (2021-2024), one person was killed and seven were seriously injured following collisions over the 50mph section of the A-road from Leominster to Hereford (Dinmore), with the average speed in excess of 60mph.

Last year more than 500 people were killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions on roads across Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire, 57 people died and 517 were seriously injured.

PCC John Campion has confirmed the latest investment has been given the go-ahead as part of a 'range of measures to reduce harm on West Mercia’s roads'.

"It's part of a long-standing commitment to ensure that we use technology evermore in the fight to make our roads safer here in West Mercia," Mr Campion said.

"Having this scheme on that section of the road is about ensuring that we are supporting motorists to behave in the way that we need them to behave and inappropriate speed is targeted so that we can reduce the casualty numbers on our roads.

"It's also important to say though it's only one part of the fight against too many deaths on our roads, education and engineering also have to go with it."

Funded by West Mercia's PCC, the scheme has also been supported by West Mercia Police, Herefordshire Council, and National Highways.

Installation work is set to be carried out speed technology firm Jenoptik, who've also installed the scheme on the A449 in Worcestershire and provide around 90% of the UK’s average speed cameras.
