Armed police hoaxed with calls of baby in danger in Hereford
Officers got calls about a baby being in immediate risk of significant harm yesterday (27 March).
Shortly before 3.20pm yesterday (Monday 27 March) police got a call about a baby in Hereford being in danger and responded with armed police and dog handlers.
As precaution, a cordon was quickly put in place covering High Town and East Street, and the public were urged to avoid the area.
Local policing commander, Superintendent Helen Wain, said: “Given the nature of the threats being made I am confident that our response was appropriate and proportionate."
A number of buildings in Hereford city centre were searched based on information received, but all were found to be clear.
As further intelligence came to light, the cordon was reduced and was removed completely at around 10pm.
Enquiries identified that the hoax call had been made outside of the United Kingdom and a suspect has been identified.
Police are currently working closely with European law enforcement partners to take action against the suspect and ensure the safety and wellbeing of any children. They have been able to confirm that no baby was harmed during the incident.
Superintendent Helen Wain, continued: “I understand that the large police presence yesterday caused significant concern within the local community and would like to thank them for their patience and co-operation while we dealt with the incident.
“This was an incredibly distressing incident and I’d like to commend the professionalism and diligence of the police officers and staff involved, as well as our colleagues at West Midlands Ambulance Service.”
