15 new bin lorries rolled out across Bromsgrove to replace older ones

The arrival of the new lorries has also prompted the replacement of Bromsgrove’s wheeled household bins so they're compatible with these modern UK-standard lorries

A set of new bin lorries have become part of the waste collection fleet working across Bromsgrove.

15 modern vehicles have been brought in to replace older refuse trucks that have reached the end of their service life and which typically needing to be changed every seven years to maintain reliability, with the older ones to be sold for parts and scrap.

The district council has allocated £4.5 million to a strategic vehicle replacement programme which is part of its commitment to delivering efficient waste collection services.

"Good planned investments in our vehicle fleet help ensure reliable bin collections and efficient services for our residents," Karen May said, the leader of Bromsgrove District Council.

Alongside this, the council has also been working this autumn to replace wheeled household bins which are incompatible with modern UK-standard lorries and the new vehicles.

Most of these replacements are now said to be complete, with the council planning to write to garden waste customers to arrange their new brown bins in the new year.

Council leader May said: "We had to replace the bins because new trucks simply can’t empty those old ones but it will benefit taxpayers because it brings us fully in line with the national standard across the board.

"That’s more efficient than before, and when you’re going round a big district emptying millions of bins, efficiency really matters.”

The fleet empties around 2.6 million bins a year across an 84-square-mile district.
