Yorkshire Cancer Research joins calls to scrap VAT on sunscreen products
The charity says making these items more accessible could help save lives
Scrapping VAT on sun cream would help save lives, according to Yorkshire Cancer Research.
The Harrogate-based charity says those products with a SPF of 30 or higher should be accessible and affordable to all.
Leah Coltham is from there and said: "There's over 1,000 people that get diagnosed with skin cancer in Yorkshire every year and nearly 200 people actually lose their lives to skin cancer every year in Yorkshire as well. This is a type of cancer that's largely preventable.
"What this would effectively do is mean that sunscreens that do offer that higher level of protection would be available for a lower price than those that offer a lower level of protection.
"It's really important that people wear sunscreen that offers a good level of protection. At Yorkshire Cancer Research we recommend that people wear an SPF of at least 30 if not higher, and also look out for a four or five star UVA rating as well."
