Extra police officers will be on patrol in North Yorkshire ahead of England's World Cup match tonight against France.

The force say there is often a rise in drink or drug driving following big sport events.

TC John Hutchinson said: "We've noticed that major sporting events, Christmas parties, it peaks. We need to try and do everything we possibly can to prevent it and drink driving, there's no doubt it endangers people and people die because of it.

"We would much rather do preventative work than pick up the pieces afterwards and part of that preventation is getting more people out on patrol and getting more high visibility.

"If you have massive sporting events, you also get that similiar thing of you get a kick off straight after work, people have been at work, they'll go and watch football in the pub, have a couple of pints and then potentially drive home."

Meanwhile in Scarborough, Carine Marshall is a French teacher at Scarborough College and she said: "So I will support France as I've been doing for the last 20 years since arriving into England but I would also secretly be happy if England wins but I'm not going to say that to any of my family or friends. I think it will be 2-1 to France.

"I think on this occasion it'll be a bigger party for us if England wins it beacuse we've already experienced it last time with France. For me, it'll be the third World Cup that I've seen France win. I think if England won it, there'll definitely be a big party."

Her son, Max, goes to Scarborough College as well. He is half French and half English. Carine added: "Max's dad, my husband, is English and obviously he'll be fully supporting England because he can't wait to see England winning the World Cup and witnessing it. Oscar, my older son and Max's brother, is quite more towards France I would say than he is towards England."

Max said: "I want England to win seeing as France won the World Cup the last time, so I'd like to see England win it this time but whatever happens it'll be a win-win for me.

"If England play well then they're going to win 3-2 but, if Mbappé is on fire and our defence isn't good, then he'll win and get a hattrick and France will win 5-1 or something."
