An unexploded device – suspected to be from World War Two – has been safely detonated by Royal Navy divers in North Yorkshire.

It was found in the River Ure last weekend near Ripon between Bishop Monkton and the Newby Hall estate.

The device was not deemed to be any immediate risk and the Royal Navy were drafted in and specialist divers detonated the device yesterday afternoon (26th March).

The two images below show the device in situ and a police drone shot from above the River Ure from when it was detonated.

Police, Navy, Fire and a range of other organisations were involved in making the area safe and managing any potential risk to local wildlife and the river.

A police cordon that was in place around the area has now been lifted and the section of the River Ure is open for passing boats.
