Shoppers urged to buy local to save Harrogate indie businesses
Independent retailers on Commercial Street say it's vital people keep buying local to keep them open
Harrogate's independent retailers on Commercial Street are urging people to shop local to keep them afloat during the pandemic.
Most reopened their doors at the start of this week with the restrictions easing after being closed for four months.
Whilst trade has been booming this week, business owners have warned sales need to continue or risk losing some retailers.
Sue Kramer, owner of Crown Jewellers, said: "We've had an amazing week so far and it's just great to see people's faces and people enjoying shopping.
"But for so many businesses that have had very little income over the last few months it is critical for the locals to come back and show their support.
"This next trading period is critical. We're prepared to put the work in and shout about our street because sometimes we are overlooked locally."
Gemma Aykroyd owns the Cheeseboard, she said indie shops are "what Harrogate's about".
She said: "All the individual shops is what Harrogate is all about and if you want really good customer service you've got to support us otherwise we won't be here. People need to shop not just for lockdown but for the future.
Alex Clarke recently opened Foxy Antiques and Interiors. She said: "It's so important to support us. Since covid and the lockdowns you see a lot of people wanting to shop independently and they're wanting to help out the local trade and we need it.
"So many people have been doing it so much more and we're excited to have people back on the high street supporting indie businesses. This is our time."
