A special education school in Knaresborough are hoping to raise enough money to build a new playground after being inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Staff and students at The Forest School are embarking on the Captain Tom 100 Challenge, where people are invited to take part in a challenge around the number 100, to celebrate what would have been his 101st birthday.

The school have already raised over ÂŁ800 by growing 100 sunflowers and some students are taking on their own challenges to raise money.

Headteacher Michelle Farr is taking part in the challenge by cycling 100 miles over the bank holiday weekend. She told Greatest Hits Radio she wanted her children to be inspired to believe "anything is achievable".

She said: "Everybody's been inspired by Captain Tom. This time last year we were all in a very dark place and Captain Tom was a little bit of sunshine for everyone.

"We want his philosophy to have a place in our school because his belief that tomorrow will be a better day is a lovely believe and it's something we want to inspire our children to believe in too.

"The children here are desperate to get a new playground so they're taking inspiration from Captain Tom and taking part in the Captain Tom 100 Challenge to raise money for that.

"You walk around this school and the children are so happy but some of the children have had to fight some enormous battles in their lives and the bravery they show every day is just unbelievable."

One student is doing 100 star jumps on his trampoline, others are doing 100 laps of the playground, while another student who is a wheelchair user has challenged himself to take 100 steps.

12-year-old Jack is doing 100 star jumps on his trampoline and has already raised over ÂŁ100.

He said: "I'm excited for my challenge so we can get a new playground. This school means a lot to me because I've been here since I was four.

Deacon is also 12 years old and a wheelchair user, but for his challenge he's going to take 100 steps in his walker.

He said: "I'm going to do 100 steps in the playground with my walker. I'm very excited to do it.

"I'll do whatever it takes to help the school."

Those taking part can donate to a charity of their choice or The Captain Tom Foundation and participants are being asked to share their 100 challenge on social media using the hashtag #CaptainTom100.

Sir Tom raised more than 32-million pounds last year by walking 100 laps of his garden ahead of his 100th birthday.

Now, others are doing charity challenges based around 100.

Dame Judi Dench will eat 100 Maltesers in honour of Captain Sir Tom Moore and Mary Berry is baking 100 cakes.
