Ripon's famous cabman shelter returns after refurbishment
The Grade II listed building was taken away earlier this year to be restored
The famous Ripon cabman shelter has returned to the Market Place after being taken away to be restored.
The Grade II listed building had stood there for 109 years after it was constructed in 1911 thanks to money from Sarah Carter, whose father was a former mayor of Ripon.
The cabman shelter has been restored on a number of occasions, including in 1980 when a wheeled chassis was added to the building so that it could be mobilised.
The latest restoration work is costing around £22,000 to return it to its former glory.
In the days of horse-drawn carriages, drivers were exposed to the elements so would shelter in the building and have a well earned bite to eat before taking their next fare.
