Reminder about extra safety measures for those on night out in Selby
The Communi-tea hub is open until midnight for anyone feeling unsafe
There's a reminder about extra safety measures in place in Selby for anyone heading on a night out.
The Police Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, Zoë Metcalfe has awarded £38,895.04 in funding to support the Operation Nightsafe project. A team of civilian staff are in constant contact with police officers and the council’s CCTV operators via a radio system to make sure that those who are using the town’s bars and restaurants are doing so responsibly. Their role is to provide an early warning system to any escalating tensions and when necessary, gather footage which can be used as evidence.
As part of the scheme, the Communi-tea hub off Abbey Walk is also open until midnight so people can go and get warm and charge their phone.
Sergeant Jackie Booth from North Yorkshire Police is in charge of "operation nightsafe": "We want our customers to feel safe on the route home, so we just felt is there something out there that we can look to try and get some people into Selby so that people feel reassured."
"The funding that we were awarded for Selby was £38,000 and that’s going to allow us to deploy these Town safety officers over the next 12 months".
"People that are worried that they can’t get home safe or they may have got misplaced from the group of friends or they feel alone, they don’t know who to turn to, those Town safety officers are there to help support those individuals and help them get home safely."
