North Yorkshire's politicians pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Politicians in North Yorkshire have paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who died at the age of 96 on Thursday afternoon (September 08).

Former Chancellor and Richmond MP Rishi Sunak thanked her Majest for a life time of service, and "for always putting the country and the commonwealth first".

Conservative MP Kevin Hollinrake, who represents Thirsk and Malton, tweeted to say the Queen was "truly the best of us".

While Labour MP for York Central Rachael Maskell said the death of Her Majesty marked the "end of an era".

Council leaders from across the county have also paid tribute, with City of York Council leader Keith Aspden asking people to strive to continue Her Majesty's values.

Harrogate Borough Mayor Councillor Victoria Oldham said The Queen "has been a constant source of courage and inspiration throughout the United Kingdom".

And Scarborough borough Mayor Eric Broadbent said Her Majesty was a "one-off" who will be deeply missed by people in the area.
