North Yorkshire Police on extra patrols during World Cup

North Yorkshire Police say they are ready to respond if there is a rise in domestic abuse calls outs tonight during the World Cup.

Charities have warned there is normally an increase during big sporting matches.

Detective Superintendent Heather Worsley is in charge of safeguarding and said: "There's lots of support agencies, women's aid and there are lots of different helplines for people to access who are too afraid to contact the police directly. If you're any danger please ring 999, we'll get you the help you need.

"Domestic abuse is an unacceptable crime. It has a huge impact on victims, families and children in particular. There isn't an excuse for domestic abuse at any point in time, particularly not over a football match.

"We've got plans in place to have extra policing resources, particularly for that night time economy, so we're able to intervene and make sure that there are some operations running on those key dates."
