North Yorkshire charity calls for more support for those with early onset dementia
Dementia Forward says often services are set up for people in their 80s and 90s
A North Yorkshire charity is campaigning for better support for anyone diagnosed with early onset dementia.
Dementia Forward wants people to share their experiences to help make improvements.
Jill Quinn is the founder and CEO and says anyone living with dementia in their 40s or 50s needs a very different kind of service: "The first thing are the practical arrangements, so people have mortgages, have young families, it's a different benefit system, they are in employment perhaps."
They've started a campaign called U & Me and are calling for increased awareness, more age appropriate care and advice, specific research for the condition.
Young Onset Dementia is dementia that develops when someone is under the age of 65. There are an estimated 42,000 people in the UK with young onset dementia, however the actual figure could be much higher, as young onset dementia is often not recognised and can go undiagnosed for a long time.
