Our exclusive investigation has found almost 300 drivers were clocked going over 100mph in North Yorkshire in the last year.

Figures from a freedom of information request show that included one vehicle going 134mph in a 60 zone.

In total 295 drivers were caught going over 100mph in the 12 months to March. Four other drivers were also caught exceeding 130mph.

The figures have infuriated campaigners who say speeding costs lives. Anita Caskey is part of the group who want fixed speed cameras set up in North Yorkshire. She was involved in a crash when she was 25 year old and couldn't walk for six years. She tells us that speeding driver had a devastating impact on her life: "I had to have major reconstruction to my spine, this person didn't even know we'd stopped, and that it involved six other cars that had ploughed into the back of each other.

I was told I would never walk again

Anita is sharing her story in the hopes that it will make people think carefully before breaking the speed limit. She's told us: "This is actually what you can do to somebody's life and my life was ruined." She has since had two major reconstructions of her spine and can now walk. She has trained as a driving instructor to try and make our roads safer.

Anita is also part of the campaign group calling for fixed speed cameras to be set up in our County. At the moment North Yorkshire police only use mobile vans.

A petition calling for the change has now reached over 1,000 signatures.

In response Zoë Metcalfe, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire and York, said:

“I am always listening to our communities’ concerns, through local meetings, my advice surgeries and correspondence with my office.

“Safer roads is one of my key priorities and, working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council, City of York Council, National Highways and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, we published the Safer Roads Strategy for North Yorkshire and York.

“Ensuring the effectiveness of the strategy, through the partnership, I am commissioning an evaluation of enforcement measures to address the behaviours that contribute to incidents on the road of which speeding is a major part.”
