The Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) is reminding people of the support available over the festive season, as the organisation continues its work to assist survivors of domestic abuse.

Speaking about the challenges some families face during the holidays, Carmel Offord, Engagement Manager at IDAS, said the period can be particularly difficult for those experiencing abuse.

“Christmas is often seen as a time of joy, but for those with an abusive partner, it can become incredibly stressful," Offord said. "Factors like financial struggles, alcohol consumption, and being confined at home can exacerbate abuse, though they do not cause it. Our priority is helping survivors stay safe and make the festive period as manageable as possible."

IDAS encourages anyone experiencing domestic abuse to reach out for support. Carmel explained that their team is there to listen and provide options without pressure.

“We won’t tell anyone what to do, but we can talk through ways to stay safe or prepare for emergencies. If you’re worried about what’s happening, support is available.”

16 Days of Activism

IDAS is also participating in the global 16 Days of Activism campaign to end gender-based violence, which runs from 25th November to 10th December.

During the campaign, IDAS is sharing online content focused on digital abuse, a growing issue as abusers increasingly use technology such as smart devices or location tracking apps as tools of control.

Carmel Offord emphasised that technology, while integral to daily life, can be weaponised by abusers:

“Technology offers countless benefits but can be used by perpetrators to control and monitor survivors. Our work aims to empower victims to use tech safely while raising awareness of how to respond to digital abuse.”

IDAS is encouraging individuals to get involved during the 16 Days of Activism by sharing resources, displaying posters at workplaces, and keeping their helpline number on hand to support those in need.
