A petition that called for the North Yorkshire County Council to abandon the Harrogate Station Gateway scheme will be debated today, January 6.

Over 700 people - who signed the document - were against the £10.9 million pound project which would part-pedestrianise James Street and reduce traffic to a single lane on parts of Station Parade to encourage cycling and walking.

The majority are worried that the scheme will push traffic into residential areas and damage business.

There were mixed views on twitter:

Anna McIntee, co-founder of Harrogate Residents Association, will be given five minutes to speak before councillors debate the matter for a maximum of 15 minutes.

She said:

“I don’t really understand how they can ignore all the residents and all the businesses that oppose it. It would be crazy to plough ahead.”
