Driver dies during a British land speed record attempt in York

An investigation is underway after a driver died during the British land speed record attempt at Elvington Airfield.
The fatal crash happened at the former RAF base near York yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 1 October).
North Yorkshire Police said it was called to reports of a "serious collision" at 4.30pm.
An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is now underway.
Governing body, Motorsport UK, issued a statement:
"We are deeply saddened to announce that a fatal accident occurred on Thursday (1 October) at Elvington Airfield during a British Land Speed Record attempt.
"Motorsport UK, together with the event organiser and the local police, has begun a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
"Further information will be provided once the initial findings of the investigation are available.
"Our thoughts are with the driver’s family, who have been informed, the organisers of the event, and other members of the motorsport community present"
North Yorkshire Police are now working with Motorsport UK to establish what happened.
A force spokesperson said:
"Shortly after 4.30pm today (1 October 2020) police were called to a serious collision at Elvington Airfield near York. Officers are currently at the scene.
"Please do not try to access the airfield at this time."
Elvington has previously hosted dozens of world record attempts and is also used as a filming location.
In 2006, Top Gear star Richard Hammond was involved in a near-fatal crash at the former RAF base.
The TV presenter suffered serious injuries after crashing a jet-powered car at almost 300mph.
