Concern over potential rise in domestic abuse cases during World Cup
A North Yorkshire Charity says there is never an excuse
There are warnings that incidents of domestic abuse are likely rise across North Yorkshire during the world cup.
Charities say calls for help from victims soared by a third during the last tournament in 2018.
It's thought alcohol, betting and tension during the tournament could act as potential triggers.
Carmel Offord is from the Charity IDAS who support victims across North Yorkshire. She tells us there is never an excuse for violent behaviour: "Domestic abuse can lead to long term harm and even jail terms so it's really important that people reflect on their own behaviours. We don't tolerate violence on the pitch so we shouldn't tolerate it off the pitch."
The Charity says they are on hand to support anyone who is worried about becoming a victim of domestic abuse. They also say we should all keep our eye out for the signs of abusive behaviours to protect our loved ones.
