Ministers invited to Scarborough school to see disruption caused by RAAC
The head at Scalby also wants pupils to be given special consideration ahead of exams
The headteacher of a North Yorkshire school affected by RAAC believes students should have special consideration ahead of their exams.
Many Year 11s at Scalby School are being taught in different classrooms without the right equipment others are in portacabins.
But ministers have said no compensation will be given.
"It's taking its toll on the quality of teaching"
Michael McCluskey doesn't agree with that: "Our teachers have felt that their performance has been impacted by the fact that they have had to change classrooms every single period for a number of weeks and that does have an impact on the quality and consistency of teaching."
He also believes the Years 11s should have some special consideration ahead of their exams: "Our school is in a really severe state of disrepair, if I can use that word at the moment and it is taking its toll on the quality of teaching, on staff welfare as well as student welfare."
"There will be some subjects that you can teach in a normal classroom environment, such as Maths, such as English that don't need any special equipment but we've got other subjects such as design technology, ICT, science where that specialist equipment is actually needed and they don't have full access to that at the moment."
In a statement the Department of Education said: "It is not possible to make changes to exams and assessments for only some groups of students to address the impact of variable disruption to teaching."
"We are working closely with affected schools to ensure the best possible education for pupils and taking every step possible to remove any obstacles to learning through mitigations including temporary accommodation and in some instances use of specialist facilities in off-site accommodation."
