North Yorkshire children to take part in 'big assembly' following on from Summer riots
A Harrogate based company is live streaming the session to talk about tolerance and diversity
Children in North Yorkshire will come together this morning to learn more issues like tolerance and diversity following on from the Summer riots.
Schools across the UK are being invited to a live streamed assembly by the Harrogate based Picture News company.
During the virtual assembly, children aged four to 11 and their teachers will have the opportunity to join with other schools around the country to learn more about the recent UK riots & community unrest and to consider the value of mutual respect and tolerance, celebrating differences, and reflect on the importance of communities.
Co founder Katie Harrison says many parents might have understandably avoided the topic.
"That often results in children becoming potentially quite afraid or scared to ask about what's happening, whereas what we try and do is encourage some of that discussion, and we try and provide support and guidance for teachers and this assembly really is about that."
"It's providing a safe space where children can talk about it, and we're not completely avoiding what happened, but the idea is we're focusing on the positives of that as opposed to some of the the the trickier topics and areas around it."
"We decided to really rather than focus on the negative and the the negative side of what happened, to really highlight how diverse we are within our own communities and encourage children to reflect upon that."
The last virtual assembly hosted by Picture News was broadcast to 427,000 children in over 4000 UK schools and welcomed Joe Wicks and David Walliams, before hearing from Stef Reid MBE, a four-time Paralympian who became a single-leg amputee following a boating accident.
