Police in York have arrested six people and charged three of them over the past few days following a spate of break-ins and thefts across the city.

A 29-year-old man appeared in court after he was arrested in connection with burglary and theft.

He faces two burglary charges, one relating to a break-in at the Rattle Owl and Bluebird Bakery on Micklegate and a break-in at the Earl Grey Tea Rooms in the Shambles.

He also faces three charges of theft from a shop including the Spar in Huntingdon, the Coop in York and Sainsbury’s in Piccadilly.

Two boys aged 15 and 16 were arrested following a break-in at a mobile phone repair shop on Spurriergate in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

They have been released on bail to allow for further enquiries to be carried out.

Two men aged 36 and 33 were arrested and are still in custody for questioning following burglaries reporting overnight in Bishopthorpe Road and a restaurant on Blossom Street.

And a 17-year-old is due to appear at Harrogate Magistrates’ Youth Court on 8 November charged with burglary at the Cattle Shed, attempted burglary at the Dog House, and the theft of a car from Silver Street, York on 14 September. He has been given conditional bail and a curfew until his court appearance next month.

Acting Inspector Matthew Kilburn of York Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

“Burglary and shop theft has a big impact on local businesses, the local community and our economy. I hope local business owners are reassured by the latest action that we have taken to bring those responsible to justice."
