Fire crews have rescued a squirrel who become trapped in a drain in Grimsby.

Somehow the animal had got its head trapped in the cover.

They used tools to release the animal on Pelham Road who's being looked after by Cleethorpes wildlife rescue.

The volunteer group said attempts were made to remove the squirrel but it soon became apparent it wasn't coming out on its own.

It was then they called for fire crews to help out.

They managed to get the squirrel out but the animal is said to be very poorly.

It's in intensive care and volunteers are keeping their fingers crossed for a recovery.

Meanwhile the group has thanked the member of the public who called for their help.

They have this advice to anyone who finds an animal in difficulty:

Please DO NOT call 999. The fire service will only deploy to wildlife from verified sources such as the RSPCA or known wildlife rescues (such as us) as this is ALWAYS a last resort!

Call your local rescue service or the RSPCA if you have an emergency like this so we can attempt a rescue first!
