Maternity staff at the Princess Diana of Wales Hospital in Grimsby are taking part in a 48 hour strike this morning (29th July).

Workers have been on the picket line outside the hospital from 7am protesting over low pay.

Ashley Harper the regional organiser for Unison in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire tells us some of the reasons why:

"We know from speaking to the staff that they are run from pillar to post having to dash around and do these things and cover everything.

"It's really really challenging, and the least that the Trust can do is actually give them a small fraction of pay for all the years they've been doing this.

Ashley Harper says taking strike action was a last resort:

"They look after mums coming into hospital to have babies. They are caring - they absolutely wouldn't want to be out on strike but the Trust just aren't being fair with them at the moment."

A spokesperson from Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS trust says they have 'robust' plans in place to maintain a safe service'
