Unions across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire want pay rise for social care workers
They say the pressure means they deserve a rise
Unions across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire are calling for a major increase in social care workers wages as staff in the sector tell us they're struggle to cope with the current cost of living crisis.
The Trades Union Congress argues a 15 pound minimum wage could address unemployment in the industry and generate 786m annually for the Yorkshire and Humber region's economy.
Many are struggling to cope.
We spoke to Sharon Westerman from the North East Lincolnshire Carer support service and asked her about the pressures.
She told us: "We are still in an economic crisis and financially many carers are struggling and continue to struggle."
"That's what makes it so important to make sure the carers are actually getting everything they are eligible for."
They need the value and recognition they deserve
"Finances are being tested at the moment."
"It's really important that carers get that value and recognition that they deserve because without them the health and social care system would simply collapse - they're vital."
"Carers care for some of the most vulnerable children and adults in our community and help address issues like hospital admissions."
