Well games don't come more exciting than this.

Nine goals, plenty of action, extra time and the right result for the Mariners - eventually.

Wrexham 4 Grimsby Town 5.

Wrexham might have Hollywood movie star Ryan Reynolds as co owner but it was town who prevailed.

They're through to the National League play off final on Sunday June 5th at the London Stadium.

They'll take on the winner of the second semi final tomorrow between Solihull Moors and Chesterfield.

Story of the game:

It was first blood to Wrexham after a foul from Luke Waterfall led to a penalty for the Welsh side.

That was converted to give the home team a one nil lead after just 13 minutes.

But it didn't last long.

The Mariners took just 2 minutes to equalise.

They were back on terms through a goal from John McAtee.

Half time score: Wrexham 1 Grimsby Town 1.

What happened next was truly extraordinary.

Grimsby went in front.

Luke Waterfall just 2 minutes after the restart netted for the Mariners to put them 2-1 ahead.

Their lead lasted just over ten minutes.

Then back came Wrexham with 2 goals in as many minutes to turn the game on its head.

Wrexham 3 Grimsby Town 2.

And it looked like it might be going the home side's way.

But things turned in Grimsby's favour when Ryan Taylor made it 3 all and town fans were delighted to see just 6 minutes later they took the lead though substitute Mani Dieseruvwe.

Could they hang on for just over ten minutes to send Grimsby through to the play off final?

Sadly no - Wrexham equalised on 80 minutes and made it 4 all.

With no more goals in the 90 minutes the match went to extra time.

Score at 90 minutes: Wrexham 4 Grimsby Town 4

Extra Time:

The problem was that both teams were exhausted after the incredible end to the 90 minutes but the Mariners seemed to be edging it.

Tristan Abraham for Grimsby had an excellent opportunity to score for Grimsby but put it wide.

It looked like penalties were the most likely outcome.

However with time running out it was Luke Waterfall who netted for the Mariners to send their fans delirious.

Finally it looked like Grimsby might just do it but having come back before you couldn't count Wrexham out.

This time there was no late twist.

Final Score: Wrexham 4 Grimsby Town 5.

Preparing for next weekend:

So the National League play off final will take place on Sunday the 5th of June.

And Grimsby Town will be there.

Whether it's Solihull or Chesterfield the Mariners will fancy their chances after 2 hard fought wins.
