Grimsby man jailed for three years for arson

He set fire to a shop which was full of people in the town

A man's facing three years in jail for arson after he set fire to a store full of people in Grimsby.

On 24th May 2022 49-year-old Steven Caldwell from Tunnard Street in the town went into a convenience store on Victor Street around 1.30pm and set bags of charcoal alight, he then proceeded to throw paper onto the charcoal that he had stashed in his pockets and fled the shop.

He was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday 23rd June.

No one was seriously injured in the incident.

DC Andrew Taylor leading the investigation said:

“Luckily staff were promptly alerted to the fire and were able to extinguish it before anybody was seriously injured.

“This was a reckless attack and I hope that the outcome of the court case provides members of the community with the reassurance that we are there, in your communities, to support and take swift and positive action against those responsible for serious offences and bring them to justice."
